Shinkai's Suzume no Tojimari Gets Incredible Trailer With English Subs

New trailer reveals Suzume's voice as Nanoka Hara

July 18, 2022

Suzume no Tojimari is one of the most anticipated anime movies of 2022: it’s the next movie by Makoto Shinkai and his studio CoMix Wave. The movie just got a brand new trailer with English subs, where we got to hear its titular protagonist Suzume for the first time ever. The trailer also includes a special theme song.

Suzume Anime Movie Gets Its First English Trailer Featuring Nanoka Hara

Back on July 5, it was announced that the movie’s protagonist, Suzume Iwato, is voiced by Nanoka Hara, a rising actress who appeared in several Japanese TV dramas since 2019. It’s a pretty usual thing for anime movies to cast their protagonists using actors and actresses, instead of seiyuu (Japanese voice actors and actresses).

If you take a look at the cast of Your Name, you’ll see that Mitsuha too was voiced not by a popular seiyuu but by an actress, Mone Kamishiraishi. A few Japanese games also cast their protagonists in this way. For Suzume no Tojimari, Nanoka Hara was selected after an audition with over 1700 applicants. She’s a fan of Makoto Shinkai’s movies herself as well.

Suzume no Tojimari translates to “Suzume’s Door-Locking”. The movie will be simply titled “Suzume” in English.

Suzume: Story Synopsis

The story begins when Suzume, a 17 years old girl from a quiet town in Kyushu(southwest Japan), ends up meeting a traveling young man “looking for a door”. Suzume then finds in the mountains a single door standing among ruins. As if drawn to it, Suzume reaches toward the door, triggering the appearance of many other mystical doors all around Japan. Each door brings a disaster, and it’s now up to Suzume to close them all, as she enters a mysterious world beyond the door, as if the morning sky and the starry night had melted together.

While Suzume has no specific release date worldwide, the movie was confirmed to be released in most countries in early 2023. I’m definitely looking forward to it as both the story and visuals have piqued my interest after this trailer. The core staff from Your Name and several previous Makoto Shinkai works is returning too on Suzume, with Masayoshi Tanaka as the character designer, and Kenichi Tsuchiya as animation director.
