Bungie Calls PlayStation Deal "Big Bold Step Forward" As Deal Closes

July 15, 2022

One of the biggest and most surprising acquisitions of this year, Bungie’s deal with PlayStation, is now complete as the agreement has finally been closed.

While the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 era was completely dominated by the latter, Microsoft has ramped up its game significantly with the new generation consoles. After offering a unique and valuable incentive to users in the form of the Game Pass, we have witnessed some really big acquisitions by Microsoft to bolster its team of first-party studios. Sony, on the other hand, didn’t shy away from the challenge and retaliated with acquisitions of Bluepoint Games and Housemarque. After Microsoft acquired Activision earlier this year and sent shockwaves throughout the industry, Sony retaliated with the acquisition of Bungie, something nobody had seen coming.

Today, PlayStation announced that the Bungie agreement has finally been closed, and now Bungie is officially a part of PlayStation Studios. This is a pretty big thing, considering the fact that the Microsoft-Activision deal, despite being announced much earlier than the Bungie deal, has still not closed since it’s facing a number of hurdles. There is a growing uncertainty of the deal falling through as well, which could significantly hurt Activision considering the current market scenario.

Coming back to Bungie, the CEO of the studio posted a tweet stating that the partnership with PlayStation is a “big, bold step forward.” He further adds that he is excited about the next step of their adventure. So far, we haven’t seen any glimpses of what is to come out of this acquisition, and Sony has reiterated that Bungie will remain an independent studio. While fans are quite concerned about future Bungie products, more importantly, Destiny content, being PlayStation exclusive, Bungie has also reassured fans that will not be the case.
