New Game Based On Popular K-Drama Kingdom In Development
Kingdom: The Blood will be a "K-zombie action game"
Netflix has licensed a “K-zombie action game” based on the hit Korean drama Kingdom. The game is entitled Kingdom: The Blood.
The game will be based on the universe of the popular Korean television show Kingdom, which is available to stream on the platform. Kingdom is an interesting mashup. First of all, it’s a period piece, as it’s set during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty (1603). It’s both a political thriller and a zombie show, a brave mix but one that ends up working out well for Kingdom.
South Korean developer Action Square is leading the development of Kingdom: The Blood. Action Square has previously released titles like the co-op top-down shooter Anvil.
The trailer released by Action Square seems to point to the game being more focused on the zombies rather than the politics of Kingdom. It depicts a warrior fighting off a town of reanimated corpses and a couple of miscellaneous location shots from the game. According to the YouTube description, the trailer was entirely created “using in-game assets.”
The game is being developed with appropriate attention paid to Korean culture, with Netflix stating “Korean culture is treated with the utmost care in both gameplay and aesthetic.” The studio is using motion capture on a professional Korean sword dancer in order to accurately capture Korean-style sword combat with its animations.
You will be able to create and customise your own character, with diverse options of Korean traditional clothing available. Action Square has also stated the player will be able to travel to their zombie-infested take on the city of Hanyang in the 17th century.
Kingdom: The Blood will have a story mode that follows the plot of the Netflix series and a conquest mode which is described as “a sequence of diverse five-minute battles, in addition to epic multi-boss battles and intense player-versus-player combat.”
Kingdom: The Blood is planned to release on both PC and mobile. The release date is currently unknown.
CORRECTION: The original article implied Netflix had heavier involvement in the title. While the game is based on Netflix intellectual property, their involvement doesn’t extend past this.
