What an end to IEM Cologne 2022!

July 17, 2022

IEM Cologne 2022 reached an end today, as Faze managed to win a close match against Navi and took home the Inter Extreme Masters.

Faze Clan had a dominant performance in the group stage with a 100% win rate without losing a single map. They managed to eliminate 00 Nation, Team Spirit, Astralis, and Movistar Riders all with a 2-0 result.

On the other hand, Navi wasn’t as flawless as Faze Clan in the group stage, but they still managed to reach the Grand Final through the upper bracket without losing a match.

So, you could probably guess how big of a match it was between Navi and Faze Clan in the Grand Final. Navi had once managed to win a PGL without dropping a single map in the whole tournament, and now Faze Clan was determined to do the same in IEM.

Here is the map line-up for Grand Finals

  • Inferno (Picked and won by Faze 16-13)
  • Overpass (Picked and won by Navi 16-13)
  • Ancient (Picked by Faze and won by Navi 19-16)
  • Mirage (Picked by Navi and won by Faze 16-9)
  • Nuke (Won by Faze 16-14)

Faze Clan started the first map strong, winning 5 rounds consecutively until a 1v3 clutch from S1mple turned the tables and Navi finished the first with a 9-6 lead. After the swap, Faze won the pistol round but Navi was still better in the next few rounds leading the game 12-8, but then Faze bounced back and made the score 12-15 in their favor with 7 consecutive wins, and finally closed out the first map with a 13-16 win against Navi.

Unlike the first map, the game in Overpass was a toe-to-toe fight with the lead switching between teams back and forth. However, Navi managed to distance themselves from Faze with a 15-11 lead and finally tied up things with a 16-13 win, forcing Faze to experience their first-ever map loss in IEM Cologne 2022.

After losing a map for the first time in the tournament, it seemed like Faze had lost their winning mentality as they were 11 rounds behind Navi in a 15-4 match, but they made an unbelievable comeback to force overtime. That being said, Navi was the victorious team at the end of overtime as they wrapped the match up with a 19-16 win.

Despite a few good rounds by Navi in Mirage, it didn’t take Faze long to put themselves ahead and dominate the game with their brilliant performance, which resulted in a 9-16 win for the red team.

While Navi started the decider map strong and took a 5-0 lead, Faze stroke back and tied things up at 6-6, though the first half eventually ended 8-7 in favor of Navi. Unlike the first half, Faze had a stellar start to the second half with a 13-9 lead, but then Navi turned the tables and took back the lead at 14-13, but it wasn’t the end for Faze as they stroke back again and win the game 16-14.
